Huddl Beta: Everything you need to know.

Beta Program • April 8th, 2026

By Timothy Starkey
Exciting Times Ahead!
Our much-anticipated beta program is right around the corner and we couldn't be more excited to finally get Huddl into the hands of Aussie PE teachers. This article covers everything you need to know before jumping in.. From what's available at launch, to how to get the most out of Skill Grader, to what we're working on next. Let's get into it.
What Is the beta?
The Huddl beta program is a free, limited-time period where Aussie PE teachers can get early access to a limited version of our platform before the official launch next year. This is an exciting opportunity to TEST it out with your students & provide valuable feedback.
Here's what you need to know upfront:
-
When does it start? Term 2, 2026 - Exact launch date coming soon
-
How long does it run? Through to the end of Term 4, 2025.
-
Who is it for? Australian HPE educators & coaches.
-
What does it cost? Nothing. The beta is completely FREE.
-
What platforms will it be available on? iOS and Android (including iPad/tablet).
Why we’re running a beta program
We are pioneering a new technology the world has never seen the likes of. Huddl's grading algorithms are complex, and applying biomechanical analysis to student movement in an educational context is new territory. For that to mean something, it has to work accurately, consistently, and in a way that's age-appropriate across every year level. That's not something we can validate through in-house testing. It requires real teachers, real students, and real schools. The beta exists so we can put our technology through its paces in the environments it was built for and ensure that what Huddl produces can be trusted as a genuine assessment tool.
Trust is everything in education. Teachers rely on assessment data to make decisions about students and we take that responsibility seriously. The beta is how we earn it. The beta period gives us the opportunity to identify issues, gather honest feedback, and continue improving the product before it reaches a wider audience. This is also your chance to shape what Huddl becomes. Every piece of feedback submitted through the app gets reviewed by our team, and the improvements we prioritise will be directly informed by what teachers tell us during this period.
What's available in the Beta?
Here’s what you’ll have access to when the beta opens:
Classes:
Once you’ve setup your account, you’ll be taken to the Classes homepage. From here, you can view and set up your classes which we’ve made that as straightforward as possible. Once your class is set up, everything else in Huddl flows from it. Assessments are tied to students, grades are saved automatically, and your Gradebook builds itself as you go.
Skill Grader:
Skill Grader is our magical assessment feature and it’s the one we’re most excited for you to get your hands on. If you’ve been living under a rock, here’s how it works. You record a student performing a fundamental movement skill. Skill Grader then processes that video post-assessment, applies a biomechanical overlay, and measures a range of key performance indicators which are all benchmarked against age-specific ranges from Foundation through to Year 10. The result is an A–E grade and a comprehensive performance report detailing how your class performed.
Skills available at launch:
At launch, Skill Grader will have support for two skills. We know that might raise an eyebrow, but here’s why. We’d rather do one thing exceptionally well than rush ten things out the door half-baked. Running is the most fundamental locomotor skill in PE, it’s assessed across every year level, and the biomechanical data it generates is powerful. Throughout the beta, we’ll progressively roll out more skills. You’ll be notified as each one becomes available.
Skill Grader — Best Practices:
To get the most out of Skill Grader, a few things are worth keeping in mind. Skill Grader assesses one student at a time. This is intentional — it allows the biomechanical analysis to be focused and accurate, rather than trying to track multiple students in a single frame.
Here are a few tips for getting reliable results:
-
Give clear task instruction — make sure your students understand what they’re performing before you hit record. Natural, confident movement gives the most accurate data.
-
Record the full movement — don’t cut it short. Skill Grader needs enough footage to analyse the complete movement pattern.
-
Position yourself — a clear, unobstructed view of the student makes a significant difference to accuracy.
-
One student, one recording — avoid having multiple students moving through the frame during the assessment.
Best Recording Settings:
This is one of the most important things we can tell you — and one of the most overlooked.
The quality of your recording directly impacts the quality of your results. Here’s what works best:
-
How long - the longer you record for, the more data Skill Grader has to work with, resulting in a far more accurate result.
-
Camera angle — film from the side where possible. A lateral view gives Skill Grader the clearest picture of the full movement pattern.
-
Distance — position yourself far enough back that the student’s full body is in frame from head to foot, with a little room to spare. 2-10 metres is optimal.
-
Lighting — natural outdoor light is ideal. Avoid recording with the sun directly behind the student, as this creates silhouetting that reduces tracking accuracy.
-
Stability — keep the camera as still as possible. A steady hand or a phone stand makes a noticeable difference.
-
Background — sometimes a busy background with lots of movement can interfere with the results.
Gradebook:
Every assessment you complete is automatically saved to the Gradebook — your central record of student results. At launch, the Gradebook is a clean, list-style view of all your recorded assessments, making it easy to track who you’ve assessed and review their grades at a glance. NOTE that this is not our proper gradebook design - we’re already working on the next version of the Gradebook, with more depth and functionality. But for beta, this will do the job.
What’s not in the beta?
Here is a list of features that will NOT be available in the beta – not in the beginning at least!
-
Full gradebook design
-
Assessment modes: game-sense, peer assessment, movement profile, worksheet & manual.
-
Saving clips
-
Generate feedback
-
Skill analysis
-
All Insights features
-
All Reports features
All of these features are still in development. The purpose of this beta is to test & refine our grading algorithms so that is what we are narrowing our focus on. An important note is that we will be rolling new features, updates & bug fixes throughout the beta.
Platform access
Huddl will be available on both Android and iOS. Getting started is straightforward:
-
Download the Huddl app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store
-
Go through the onboarding steps to setup your account
-
Set up your first class and add your students
-
You're ready to assess
The beta is open to Australian PE teachers. If you haven't already registered your interest, head to www.huddlapp.com.au to sign up.
Student data & privacy
We know that data privacy is a serious consideration for schools and it should be.
Here's what you need to know:
-
All student data is stored securely in Australia
-
No student data is shared with third parties
-
Huddl contains no advertising and no third-party tracking
-
Only the class teacher has access to their students' data
-
Huddl complies with Australian privacy requirements
If your school has specific data privacy questions, you're welcome to reach out to us directly at support@huddlapp.com.au
The Founding Schools Program
The Founding Schools Program is our way of recognising the schools that back Huddl early. Schools that join during the beta period are eligible to become a Founding School — locking in discounted pricing and receiving priority support as Huddl grows. This is the best value access to Huddl that will ever be available, and it's exclusively open to schools that commit during the beta.
If your school is interested in becoming a Founding School, check out more info here: www.huddlapp.com.au/foundingschoolsprogram
What Happens After Beta?
The beta runs through to the end of Term 4, 2026. After that, we’ll take all the feedback to improve our services & prepare for full release. A few things worth knowing:
-
Your data will NOT carry over from the Beta to the full launch.
-
Pricing — post-beta pricing details will be communicated before the beta period ends so there are no surprises. Founding Schools will have already locked in their discounted rate.
-
Continued development — features added during the beta continue to be available post-launch. The platform only grows from here.
How to Give Feedback
Giving feedback is simple. Inside the Huddl app, you'll find a built-in feedback channel where you can send us your thoughts directly — whether that's a bug you've encountered, a feature you'd love to see, or something that just didn't work the way you expected. There's no form to fill out, no email to track down. Just open the app, share what's on your mind, and it goes straight to our team.
Join us for the ride!
This is the start of something we've been working toward for a long time — and we're glad you're here for it.
Whether you're curious, keen, or ready to go all in — come and give it a try. We'd love to have you.
